So let’s explore how to make money with blogging step-by-step. Making money blogging is a dream of most people that begin to write online. If you google “how to start a business online” most of the top results pertain to starting a blog, picking a niche, and monetizing your traffic. There are 2 very important things you need to know when diving into blogging for money.
It’s not as hard as you think and it’s not as easy as you think.
It also doesn’t happen fast, blogging is not a get rich quick scheme, it takes time and countless hours of work. But if you are able to garner a following, it’s all worth it. You gain freedom from a 9 to 5 and you can engage with that following which makes you sort of a quasi celebrity. People in your niche will look up to you as an authority and appreciate the content you put out. It’s fun, and it’s a great way to make a living. Once your following is established and you know what you’re doing you can make a nice income on less than 10 hours a week.
Getting Started. Create a Blog.
There are a million blogging platforms out there now, but I’m only going to recommend one. It’s WordPress. It’s the most user friendly and is constantly evolving. The plugins available are amazing, you won’t find a community more devoted to creating ways to improve.
Buy a Domain. Buy Hosting.
There are 2 ways you can approach selecting a domain: Brandable or exact match. Brandable could be anything catchy or even your name if it’s available. If it’s a blog about fishing an example would be Ebass.com or Finefishing.com. An exact match domain is selecting exactly what people would search for when finding your site, so like cheapcellphones.com or buyshoes.net. Now having a .com is nice, but you can just as easily succeed with a .net or .org. I’ve used .info as well, but it’s not nearly as important as the content on your site.
With recent updates to google’s algorithms domain names just aren’t that important anymore. The days of buying cheapcellphones.com and just putting some crappy ads up are long gone, so don’t sweat the domain name that much. Just pick one that can be memorable.
GoDaddy has the cheapest wordpress hosting I’ve found and it’s incredibly easy to install. They are running a special for 1/dollar a month and it comes with a free domain. So 12 dollars gets you up and running for an entire year. All you have to do is write.
Write. Write. Write. Original Content.
Let’s get this straight, you MUST write all the time. At a minimum you need to publish a blog post 2 times a week, but 3-5 times is ideal. I have a family, including an 18-month old girl (her name is Hendrix) so time to write is few and far between. So I get up before she does, at 5:30am, grab a cup of coffee and just write. You think you may run out of topics, but let me tell you they are endless, in any niche, people in your niche are thirsty for any topic your brain can conjure up as long it’s well written and written with passion.
Now you’re not alone, which is why I recommend joining Wealthy Affiliate. WA is a huge community of like-minded bloggers that help each other achieve online success. It has helped me tremendously over the years. Any questions a beginner asks will be answered, the resources available include step-by-step guides, all-in-one domain and hosting, a community that is eager to help each other, and research tools that will help you choose your perfect niche. It also just helps you keep going because seeing others succeed is the ultimate motivator. Wealthy Affiliate is my best recommendation for making money online, for beginners and well-seasoned bloggers alike. I will be mentioning it a lot on this blog because it truly can help jump start your success and maintain that success.
Paying for Content.
If you would like to get more content for your blog you can pay for high-quality articles. Prices range about 15-20 dollars per 500 words for good quality. I only recommend you do this for a small amount of time and only in the infant stages of your blog because you do not want a blog filled with posts that were all paid for. There won’t be a consistent voice and people can sense that. You will lose repeat visitors which is not good if you’re trying for long term success. The only place I’ve ever bought content from the BlackHatWorld Marketplace Forum, the pinned posts are your best bet because they’ve been reviewed and vetted.
Ranking in Search Engines (SEO)
This is also something you can pay for, but please don’t because you can learn Search Engine Optimization (SEO) the process of making your blog search engine friendly which in turn increases ranks, fairly easily, especially with wordpress plugins designed to streamline the process. Yoast SEO is the best of these plugins and it’s free. If you have glaring problems in an article that the search engines frown upon Yoast will let you know and offer a solution, just find it in popular plugins in your wordpress dashboard.
The aforementioned Wealthy Affiliate has an amazing tool called Jaaxy that allows you to find easy to rank keywords. Keyword research can also help with finding things to write about as Jaaxy will give you more suggestions when searching.
Most important in SEO is building links to your site. Get in touch with blogs in your niche and send a friendly email asking to trade links. The more popular blogs in your niche may have an option to buy a link if you have the extra money. There are also services that will build links for you for a price, some good ones can be found on the warrior forum and blackhatworld.
If your content is on point the links will flow to you, you will be getting the emails, and people will ask you if they can buy links on your site. So focusing on the quality of your content is really the best link builder. Be diligent on the links, but not too diligent as the goal is to have people approaching you.
Traffic is King.
If you have followed everything up to this point then the traffic will come. You can pay for some ads just to try things out, but the real gold is showing up in Google results on the first page without having to pay for it. Get to writing and this will take care of itself.
Of course you want to create a social media following as well. Create accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. for your blog. Be personable, be yourself.
So how to bring in the cash?
Monetizing your blog is simple and straight forward. After you get some traffic coming in here’s the best ways to make money from it.
Adsense pays you for every click they receive from your blog. You place banner or text ads around your site and collect revenue. It’s the best network for beginners in particular because it’s easy to get accepted and easy to implement. Once you get more popular you can get accepted by networks that pay better, but depending on your niche Adsense can still be lucrative.
CPA Networks (Cost-Per-Acquisition)
The best CPA network is Maxbounty and people can make a lot of money with it. That being said I don’t recommend CPA ads unless you’re in a niche related to “making money online” or weight loss. CPA is more for affiliate marketers, but if you find the right offer that relates to your site it can bring in some good revenue.
Amazon has grown so much that people build blogs specifically targeted to selling amazon products. Online shopping is enormous, placing links or ads from amazon with products directly related to your niche on your site is a no-brainer at this point. Amazon converts, you need to implement niche related products into your site. Do a little research and testing on what placements will work for you.
Sell Direct Links and Banners
Your site is now popular, congratulations. Now prepare for the flood of emails that are going to come in of companies wanting to advertise on it. When negotiating the price of links and banners on your blog always start high because they need you, you certainly don’t need them.
If you want to create your own merchandise for your blog like t-shirts, mugs, etc. Shopify is the best way to sell it. Creating an entire store around your blog can be created simply with a few clicks.
Probably my favorite way to make money with blogging. Just google your niche followed by “affiliate programs”. You want to look for programs that have a monthly fee attached that way you get paid residual income. Promote the programs that fit into your niche and bring in a decent bounty because there are a lot that are straight up trash.
You have everything you need to get started. There’s just one thing left to do.
Keep going and never stop trying.
